Remember Dreams to Serve Your Higher Self

As a dreamworker, I've heard the phrases, "I don't dream" or, "I know I dream, but never remember them!"

Everyone dreams. In fact, you can have up to seven dreams every night! The most I've ever had, and remembered was four or five. Remembering dreams doesn't come naturally to everyone, yet is a valuable skill when you're seriously searching for meaning, and connections to waking life.

As my very first blog post on my new website, I thought it'd be appropriate and helpful to share some tips I've learned along the way that have worked for me, and countless others! Let's explore some simple techniques to help you remember your dreams.

Your very own dream journal is your personal tool to connect with your subconscious.

Top Five Tips for Remembering Dreams

  1. Record Your Dreams

If you're like me, then you're awfully forgetful! One of the easiest ways to remedy this, is to have a pen and paper nearby, or your phone for ease of recording your dreams in the middle of the night. I use my "notes" app on my phone to quickly jot down dreams. I am able to even categorize my notes, so I've created the category, "Dreams". Also, to help reduce eye strain, I make sure my brightness is turned all the way down, as well as having the blue light filter turned on. Believe me, it can be quite the challenge to sit up, and remain awake enough at 3 AM, but trust me- jotting down your dream will be a lifesaver when you wake up later! It's okay if you don't write your entire dream out; jot down the important symbols, characters, and settings. Later in the morning, when you reread your notes, your dream will come back to you fully. Then you can allow time to fill in the details. For this, I prefer a physical journal. I've found when I hand write, I gain insights as I go.

2. Get a Dedicated Dream Journal

As mentioned above, I highly recommend getting your very own, personal dream journal. Choose something that resonates with you. This will give you a sense of ownership of your dreams. It will also help you build a relationship with your subconscious. Writing your dreams in your journal will allow the dedicated space to reflect and work with your dreams. It's also good to have them documented so you can see how they transform over time. You'll be able to go back and work on an old dream if needed as well.

3. Create a Mantra

As you get ready for bed, and right after laying down, take some time to meditate on a mantra that will help you dream and remember your dreams in the morning. A simple one that I like to say is, "I will dream, and remember my dreams." Others you can use are- "I am ready to dream", "I am listening to my dreams", and "I trust in my dreams." Basically, once you let down any guard and let your subconscious know you're ready, your dreams will come through.

4. Get to Bed at a Reasonable Time

In order to prep for dreamtime, you'll want to wind down from your day. This seems like a no-brainer, but in fact for a lot of people, this is a big-brainer. Many people like to squeeze in as many activities as they can in their day right up until bedtime. Then they either crash immediately, or endlessly scroll on facebook before passing out. I recommend allowing your brain to relax at least an hour before bed. Choose a book to read, meditate, play a game, do something non-electronic to let your brain know you're slowing down for the evening. Take your time getting ready for bed. Create a bedtime ritual. Put some relaxing sounds or music on after you've gotten comfy and brushed your teeth. Then, repeat your mantra to yourself before peacefully drifting off.

5. Use Aromatherapy or Crystals

Lastly, I like to use different essential oils or crystals to evoke dreams. Lavender is my go-to oil. I'll either inhale deeply before laying down, or place a drop on the back of my neck, as well as my forehead. Other helpful scents include frankincense, chamomile, ylang-ylang, and clary sage. My go-to crystals are quartz, and amethyst. You could also try labradorite, citrine, or celestite.

Now that you know a few tips to help you dream and remember your dreams, get to bed and get ready to receive messages of your subconscious!

Rest well, and dream well!
