Problem Solving Through Dream Incubation

Writer: Carla AnnCarla Ann

Every night we have the opportunity to embark on a brave journey, an epic quest, a grand adventure. Sometimes this just isn’t the case when we dream. Many dreams can appear jumbled and random- a big blur of whizzing images and feelings piled on each other. Or, you might not even remember what you dream. Or, you may only have frightening dreams that leave you upset and terrified to fall asleep. Personally, I’ve experienced all of these. And I’ve also experienced what it’s like to harness the power of influencing my dreams. If you wish to not feel like a victim to your subconscious anymore, keep reading!

What is Dream Incubation?

As the name implies, it has to do with “incubating” or nurturing our intentions for the dream realm. Just as a bird’s egg has to be incubated in order to hatch, our dreams can be incubated so important messages can come through easily. When done right, these dreams can be the most powerful, and hold potent answers for questions in day-to-day life. What I’m getting at is, you can influence your dreams by asking specific questions of your subconscious.

How to Use the Dream Incubation Technique

What are you going through right now in your life? Are you struggling with something? Not getting along with someone? Perhaps you’re looking to get a new job, or advance in your current job. The first step to using the dream incubation technique is to pinpoint the area of your life you’re looking to improve. Write that down on a small piece of paper. Next, you’ll want to see how you’re looking to work through that issue. What is your intention for that issue? Figure out a question to ask your subconscious, and ask for the answer to be revealed in a dream. Write your question under your issue. For example, if you’re looking to start something new in your life, you can simply ask, “what step, or steps can I take to achieve my goal?” Or say, “show me where to go next.”

Once you’ve written down your area of life, and your question(s), take your paper to bed with you. Allow for some time to meditate on your question as you’re lying in bed. Now is also a good time to visualize where you want to be/who you want to be with/what you want to be doing, etc. Have a clear picture in your mind as you hold your question. Now, place that under your pillow and drift off to sleep. It’s that simple!

If you have a dream in the middle of the night, be sure to grab your notebook, journal, or phone and jot it down. Don’t worry about making it perfect; you can just take notes on the important aspects. In the morning, see if you received an answer to your question! No worries if you didn’t. Keep trying! Repeat the same process the following night- setting your intention, holding your questions, and then putting them under your pillow.

If you do receive an answer to your question, and you're looking for a little more information, you can ask a follow up question! Don't be shy. On that same piece of paper where you now have your intention, question, and answer, feel free to ask another question! Especially if you're looking for clarity or a deeper answer.

Oh, and naturally, you’ll want to make sure you get in a good, relaxed space before bed. If you take your dreams seriously, and put in a little bit of effort, you just might be surprised at the results!
